RILCA Talk presents
Japan’s Migration Studies and the Impact of the Corona Virus Pandemic: A Case Study from Central Tokyo

Speaker:
Professor Dr. Tetsuo Mizukami, Rikkyo University
Vice President, Rikkyo Second Stage College, Tokyo, Japan

Abstract:
Will sociological disciplines be able to rise to the new challenges emerging in urban life? This question has particularly stimulated the field of migration and ethnic studies, which has seen a surge in research. The COVID-19 pandemic has had profound impacts on our lives and introduced new communication styles.

In this talk, we will explore the impact of COVID-19 on Japanese society. The presentation will begin with a brief review of changes in migration research perspectives within Japanese sociological studies. It will then discuss the growing diversification of ethnic communities in central Tokyo. Finally, the talk will examine how international migration temporarily came to a halt during the pandemic and the new developments that have emerged since.
